I think that Ms. Q.B. Tyler is an excellent writer and she has proven that her skills have elevated each time she writes a new book. I’m elated that she’s finally making her books with woman of color as the main female lead. Representation matters and it’s well deserving to read about someone that people of color can relate to.As much as I like her books I didn’t so much navigated to this as I executed the others I’ve read by her.The book went off rather slow and very boring. I couldn’t feel any connection to either character. There was a disconnect, particularly having the mom died early on. I felt that both characters showed no emotions to the sudden death and the mom character suffered from that. That was an easy cop out for the author to expunge an obstacle that was clearly in the characters way. But the mom character was only mentioned seldomly that I didn’t feel her presence at all. Then there wasn't a back story on the mom at all I think her actual name was mentioned only a few times.I induce that this book was meant to be a taboo romance, but it just seemed that the relationship between Dominic and Stassia was forced to me and adding the absentee dad just seemed so random and a possible filler. And because of the sluggish start and unnecessary inner monologue I skimmed through most of it.I likewise found the main characters really annoying and Dominic reminiscing of times about his two dead wives was for the most part bothersome.Even though I liked the romance/sensual scenes in it, I still couldn’t feel that undying devotion and sudden passion for these two. I only felt that the author built up this idea that this relationship between the two main characters was scandalous and very intense but in reality is wasn’t all that dramatic. The panache of the writing really lets this story down at times. The book is full of flunky dialogue and awkward horny situations. The plot of the book is inconsistent, swinging between reserved angst, polite language and then to a more expletive word salad. There were a bunch of unnecessary description and immaturity between the characters and also the way the dialogue was spoken often was a bit too repetitive. Yeah, we know she’s your dead wife, daughter, yes, we get he’s your stepfather. We know, since the book started so please don’t remind us every time they are alone or is about to be intimate. I didn’t like the ending, and I found this book hard to read because of how unrealistic some of the reveals were. I didn’t anticipate the need to have to do that, and was very confused by some logistics. In conclusion it’s an okay read, that needs a lot of concentration. The idea was there for an epic taboo read, but the execution merely collapsed.I do recommend if you are able to set aside your belief that this relationship was indeed taboo. It was to me a very tame read if I do say so myself. This may not be a hit with me, yet, it may be perfect for someone else. Holy Cow!! One thing I can say about QB’s books is she is known for her deliciously forbidden and taboo stories with amazingly crafted characters you can’t help but to fall for, root for and fist pump for when they overcome all their obstacles! This story was no exception. As a matter of fact I would say this will be her most forbidden and controversial to date. QB takes a fearless approach and fabulously toes the line between right and wrong with a stepfather/stepdaughter story with scenes so unbelievably so hot and steamy you will dang near combust and you definitely won’t soon forget! 🔥🔥Dominic met Stassia when she was just ten years old. I will say that was a bit more of a struggle for me to forgive than I have had with other stepdad/stepdaughter age gap stories. I did find I was able to forgive the huge age difference fairly quickly because I just loved both of their characters. He wasn’t this deviant or anything. He was actually a really good guy and he cared for her and wanted to take care of her. Stassia was mature and responsible. I really couldn’t find things about them I didn’t like. I loved them as individual characters. I just knew together they were gonna be epic. It all had the potential to go up in flames if everyone found out. That alone will keep you on edge, wondering when/how that’s going to happen? This book flows well and is engaging. But you add in the awesome secondary characters, attention to details and we’ve got a very good story, folks. It was truly unforgettable. It was also surprisingly pure and unexpectedly sweet for something so forbidden. Dom was Stassia’s introduction to all things intimate after all! But it didn’t feel forced or skeevy. He treated her with respect. He devoted himself to taking care of her every need. This has so much of what makes a good taboo/forbidden story so good. It’s also what makes me fall so hard for these kinds of stories. The ones that make you grapple with the right and wrong aspects of it, but at the same time it’s so, so good you can’t help but to be addicted to every.single.sinful.moment! The internal struggle is real y’all! There are so many things about this book that push the envelope and boundaries. I happen to be okay with that. These are my kinda books! These writers are my peeps! QB is my girl. I rush to devour her books. I couldn’t wait for this one to hit my kindle. You will definitely be fanning yourself with this one.
