*****This is my personal opinion of my reading experience of this book. Anyone else with a different opinion and experience is free to disagree.****I’ve read everything by this author and enjoyed the experience even when the dark themed content pushed my boundaries regarding consent. Her Bellandi Crime Syndicate series was an even-handed blend of strategic ruthlessness and non-conforming romantic love. The characters were flawed mature adults who eventually found a sanctuary in each other in a world that had been less than kind. The anti-heroes were redeemed by their love and need to build a better life with the women they’d chosen. They clearly saw and respected their women for who they were, wanted all that goodness to bring light to their world and did every ruthless act to protect that light in their dark world. This new series is not that.**some spoilers if you continue**Given how much I’ve enjoyed other work by this author, I believe she is a talented writer. I’ve enjoyed her stories for their world-building and rich character development of people who were flawed but not inherently evil or one dimensional. The themes were dark, the characters complex and their relationships were complicated. By the end of the tale, there was always sincere respect and love regardless of character flaws. In spite of the trauma or torment experienced as the story unfolded, I always felt better for having read one of her books.Unfortunately, I can’t say I’ve experienced the same with this latest series. The story here in book 2 feels rushed and flat. I don’t feel a real flow as I read but rather as if the scenes are a singular snapshot thrown together. The background for the main characters comes across fragmented and the overall sequence suffers for it.There is absolutely nothing romantic about what Isa experiences in this story unless the bar is set so low as to be considered multi-faceted levels of abuse. Deceiving and psychologically conditioning someone you will ultimately control with an uneven non-consensual power exchange in my opinion is disrespectful to the idea of true power itself. In the Bellandi series by this author, yes, there are moments of non consent and outright lying. However, there is no gaslighting or mental torture of the love interest. There is no physical torture and there is, especially, no disrespect. It’s all laid out ... it is what it is ... and the female characters are given the anti-hero’s version of loving support to get through it to the other side. That honesty, for me, is what is what makes a good, solid dark themed romance. What Isa experiences with Rafael is adrenalin fueled, manipulative and toxic, but not love or even authentically romantic, because in every fundamental way, he doesn’t respect her as she is ... and all the clues are there that he won’t until she twists herself into his image. It’s even more tragic when you realize she is a sheltered teenager with unresolved trauma issues and he is a psychotic middle-aged man. For the author to set this story up so that this unredeemable human being is in power to supposedly “free her” from her trauma so she realizes her “true potential” is repulsive. It is the most vile form of abuse packaged as love and growth. This theme seems to be all the rage right now, so I’m not making a personal attack in any way. I’m merely sharing that I don’t share this view of love between two damaged individuals. In real life, this dynamic, as portrayed by the author, does not end well. I’ve seen it, and perhaps this is why I don’t see the “romance” of it.I was sadly disappointed in Rafael. In spite of the exotic location, the pet names and his magic man-tool, he still came across as a one-dimensional character lacking any real depth. For all that the author tried to dress him up with an erotic Spanish flavor and unimaginable wealth, he was merely at heart a street thug. Like Scarface with his automatic weapon trying to woo and entice a lady love that wanted nothing to do with him. Rather than protecting the heart and soul of this very young woman, to build a life of mutual respect and love within a criminal lifestyle, Rafael was a boot on her neck, bringing Isa down into his narcissistic driven myopic world so he never had to grow beyond being a twisted man-child to become the better version of himself. Instead of a suave, debonair and intelligent man who ruled his empire with ruthless intelligence, strategic moves and a worthwhile endgame, he came across like the broken and psychotic Joker, with the power to force others into his delusion. His internal dialogues weren’t intelligent or strategic but rather a never-ending mix of rambling reaffirmations of what he wanted and what he was owed because of his obsessively driven need. In my opinion, Rafael wasn’t redeemable and not even an anti-hero. He was just a psychotic bully drug lord/criminal man-child bulldozing his way through life on one never ending bloody man-child tantrum. Given his own twisted emotionally stunted psyche, I found his belief that he knew who Isa should be better than who she was or wanted to be a vile concept. Truly abhorrent. For all his words to the contrary, he doesn’t really see Isa as a separate person of worth but only as an object to twist in his own demented making. The collusive never-ending gaslighting of this teenage female by all the surrounding characters was abhorrent and tragic rather than inspiring, which is I’m sure contrary to what the author meant to convey. Nonetheless when someone is besieged at all sides to ignore her own truths and instincts so everyone else can live comfortably in their own demented feudal world, it is really just common brain washing.Sadly, everything in this story seemed contrived rather than flowing from a fully developed set of characters and an actual story with any depth. As the feared head of a crime syndicate Rafael’s only skill appeared to be acting as a blunt, bloody “hammer” after problems surfaced. The only strategic planning we really see is his sending three young brothers to Chicago for 16 months to befriend and babysit his underaged love interest. A teenage girl in high school who, by her own nature, already lived a quiet life based on routine and duty. The scenes with the supposedly unhinged sister and rapist ex seemed juvenile and contrived; the parents apathetic and useless; the grandmother without any real purpose overall. Her family and best friend rapidly serve their purpose in the story and then are swiftly discarded. The reader never truly gets to understand the depth and dynamics of those relationships so they come across as cardboard placeholders.Rafael is this all powerful feudal type crime lord who supposedly had Ibiza wrapped around his iron hand and yet couldn’t even prevent his enemies from strolling on to this island however and whenever they pleased to interrupt his planned time with Isa. The plan he had 16 months to perfect. This is an island he supposedly rules and where he is deathly feared by all - an island - which by definition is surrounded by water and therefore geographically lends itself to more restricted access. The is especially bewildering as we’re told ad nauseam that Rafael has every police and governmental official in his power. And yet, his only reaction to this serious security breach is to beat up and verbally threaten the two individuals (one being an equally ruthless crime lord.) Instead of any strategy meetings with his high level advisors to determine the cause of the multiple security breeches so it can’t happen yet again, his solution is to hold his second-in-command completely accountable and shoot the man in the leg ... which we the reader are then left to assume will fix the security problem. These do not strike me as great leadership skills, nor did it appear that his syndicate was all that well coordinated. In fact, I was left with the impression that Rafael’s great empire was made up of only a handful of young men at his beck and call with an island full of passive peasant like people who wouldn’t cross him ... and of course the nameless invisible police and governmental officials he had in his pocket. He also presumably did all his own wet work, which doesn’t really support his having a criminal enterprise (the word implying more than one person to go do this type of work so he could do the more strategic thinking ... or not, in his case.) That was his great empire. There were many devices used to give Rafael’s world a feel of realism and traditional rituals, but for me, they fell flat because no time was really spent by the author in fleshing them out or giving the reader any peek into the history of this enterprise. The implication alone is left to fill in all the gaps, I.e., the character is from Spain, this location was in Spain, this is the flavor of Spain, etc ... It all felt contrived so I’m not going to spend time discussing the whole ridiculous traditional branding Rafael employed to discipline both his employees and the object of his supposed affection. Yes, nothing says love like being forcibly branded because you made a choice to learn self defense against your lover’s wishes (your sin being that you are his sexualized woman-child with no right to have choice and because it offends his ego since it implies he can’t protect you at all times. Because of course, it’s all about him.)The ending of this book 2 in the series where the author sets the reader up to believe that pressuring Isa to commit an act of murder ... against a man whose only active offense is being a more vile criminal than Rafael ... is her continued journey of becoming who she’s really supposed to be (because, of course, once again Rafael knows that better than she herself ever can) the Queen to his King. Sadly, given the quality of this King, it really isn’t something of which to be proud. For this reader, this is a sad, tragic, abhorrently twisted tale of a narcissistic, psychotic little man who will never achieve anything great or meaningful and his ruthlessly demented need to make someone over in his own image. I truly mourn for who Isa could have grown to be if she had never stepped in to his view. I won’t be continuing the series because there’s really no point. I expect the future will have Isa dropping f-bombs left and right to show how she’s grown from the quiet book reading introspective character she once was, and gutting grown men with aplomb at the direction of her psychotic husband, Rafael. In the meantime, I’ll go back and do a reread of the Bellandi series, and be grateful I first had that reading experience from this author. I wish her the best on her future work. I’m so sad that I didn’t enjoy this as much as I could’ve... while I love dark romance and dubcon/noncon, for a book 2 in a series, I expected more... and I’m so bummed....The book continues from where book one ended, right when Rafael injects Isa and she is unconscious. He kidnaps her and takes her to his private island, where he proceeds to put two trackers in her while she’s still unconscious and has a doctor give her a fertility shot to try to get her pregnant as soon as possible- all without her consent (well, she’s unconscious and never finds out this happened- at least not in book 2). This happens right in the beginning of the book, so I was sure that it was going to get better, maybe because Rafe is so obsessed with her and I wants her forever (love the title). That part didn’t bother me; what bothered me was Isa not having more of a back bone. She wakes up and realizes that she’s sore but doesn’t fight much. Now I get it; she’s at the mercy of a mob boss, killer, obsessive man, so there’s not much she can do. But, I wanted her to fight her attraction to him more. She continually gave in, making it seem like she didn’t have a mind of her own. Rafe makes it hard for her to choose anything, even going as far as deciding what she’s going to wear for the day. And yes, she’s on an island, so she really can’t leave. Even when she tried, there was nowhere for her to go and everyone that lives on the island won’t lift a finger to help her.We sometimes see a sweet side to Rafe, but then he goes and does some thing that sets him back a step (in my eyes). And Isa... I felt horrible for her. While I get it- she’s only 18, lived a pretty sheltered life in many aspects, was a V before meeting him, I wanted her to have more of a say or not accept everything thrown her way. She tried to fight it, but then Rafe makes her submit and accept it all with sex. 🙄 I’m all about the sexual attraction and the intense chemistry that even makes ME feel goosebumps, but when your man is being an @$$#0!€ and isn’t giving in to you at all, then how am I supposed to root for him? Ugh. I have so many mixed feelings! One thing that made me root for Isa was when she fought back (yessss Isa)- stabbing him with the fork and making him bleed, throwing things at him, scratching him a lot, not telling him everything he wants to know about her, because he might “own” her body, but won’t own her mind , shoot even when she forced him to use a gun on her to marry him... I was rooting for her (and him, kind of). Buuuut then the branding scene happened...SPOILERS (as if the previous paragraph doesn’t have any spoilers LOL). I hated when he branded her. When he threatened to do it the first time, I almost stopped reading. But, then he changed his mind, and I felt relief. Him forcing a tattoo on her didn’t bother me as much, because he got the same tattoo as well (plus, tattoos are removable lol). But then he decided to brand her anyway when she supposedly betrayed him by not listening to him. Um... excuse me... her trying to learn how to fight and protect herself is NOT betraying you... IDGAF about you feeling “upset” that she thinks you can’t protect her. In this freaking mafia world, you just never know! Ugh! And how he “punished” her for “relieving” (with her hands 😉 cause she missed him) herself when he was gone was OTT 🤦🏻♀️. I was slightly cringing (ouch... butt... ugh), but then right after, he freaking branded her anyway!!! He already tattooed her, put trackers in her, gave her a fertility shot without her knowing, won’t wear protection so she’s bound to get pregnant (which I’m all for lol), and has her basically stranded on an island away from the life she’s known and her family...oh and he forced her to marry him! That’s not enough??? Honestly, I don’t know if he’s redeemable. I feel horrible saying this cause I LOOOOOVED HIM in book 1!!! He did no wrong in my eyes. But now... the branding scene was the hay that broke the camel’s back for me. I love me a crazy OTT J/p H that is obsessed with the h and worships her like no other... but branding her the way he did it was horrible! Annnnnd... to top it ALL OFF... while she’s being tied down and tattooed, he’s edging her (I have to admit, it was kind of hot but probably very unrealistic), and while he brands her, he’s sexing her, while holding her down and branding her, and she managed to O? Um.... what??? 🤔 how can she possibly be THAT into it when her skin is being burned off that she still manages to O??? 🤔😡. Yes, he did it to himself first 🙄- maybe to show her he’s willing to do it to himself as well... but then doing it to her and her accepting it and then O’ing right after? I was rolling my eyes and was about to DNF, but at this point, it was like 90% of the way in. I needed to just finish. END OF THE SPOILERS- which is really just me venting...I’m so sad 😩. I don’t know about reading book 3 now. The cliffy was so good! I wanna know why the accident happened!
